The John G. Shedd Aquarium (Shedd) houses 1,500 species of aquatic animals, educates millions of visitors annually, and conducts conservation research locally and globally. Founded in 1930, it was the first inland aquarium in the world. Its mission is to spark compassion, curiosity, and conservation for the aquatic animal world. The Shedd utilizes its collection and programming to create a greater understanding and appreciation of wildlife and environmental stewardship. With this award, the Shedd builds its diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) initiative.

The John G. Shedd Aquarium houses 1,500 species of aquatic animals, educates millions of visitors annually, and conducts conservation research locally and globally. Founded in 1930, it was the first inland aquarium in the world. It features 32,500 varieties of fish, reptiles, amphibians, marine mammals and birds. The Shedd houses over 100 habitats and six permanent exhibits that demonstrate the aquatic diversity of North and South America, Asia, Africa and Australia. More than 2 million people visit each year. More than 13,000 students participate in the aquarium’s educational programs.
