International African American Museum

Founded in 2005, but officially opened to the public in early 2023, The International African American Museum (IAAM) in Charleston, S.C., is the culmination of a long-held vision to honor the untold stories of the African American journey at one of the country’s most prolific slave-trading ports. With this award, IAAM intends to launch a museum experience, featuring nine galleries that house 11 core exhibitions and one semi-annually rotating exhibition. Funds support investments in scaling staff capacity, building sustainable systems and operational infrastructure, elevating visitor experience and engagement, and enhancing programmatic and curricular development.
