Founded in 2010, the Instituto para las Mujeres en la Migracion (Institute for Women in Migration, or IMUMI) is a Mexican organization specializing in improving the situation of migrant women and children. IMUMI conducts research and advocacy and offers legal representation to migrant women, children, and families. This award addresses the family separation crisis resulting from shifts in U.S. immigration policies by aiding migrant families and unaccompanied immigrant children to reunite safely and to seek asylum or other forms of legal humanitarian protection in the United States and Mexico. This grant supports policy solutions to some of the causes of involuntary family separation between Mexico and the United States and legal remedies for migrant families already separated. The Institute for Women in Migration (IMUMI), a Mexico-based NGO, is dedicated to policy research on -- and the provision of legal services to -- migrant women and their families. This MacArthur grant funds a research project aimed at identifying policies and practices in the U.S. and Mexico that lead to the separation of migrant families, and in particular the separation of children from parents. IMUMI will produce policy recommendations for providing families with more options for reunification, and they will also develop a "toolkit" and guidelines for helping migrants address legal challenges in cases of family separation caused by detention, deportation, or other circumstances.
