The Institute of International Education’s Latin America and Caribbean regional office in Mexico City, opened in 1974, administers programs in higher education, including scholarship management, youth training and engagement, and English language testing. With this award, IIE is developing and administering a Midwifery Scholarship Program to provide financial support to midwifery students and schools in Mexico, where professional midwifery is a growing field requiring continued support and capacity building. The Program intends to support between 120 and 160 students and at least five schools over the next two years through a competitive, merit- and needs-based selection process. The award is expected to generate a new cohort of professional midwives, connect them through the program, and strengthen midwifery schools by providing small grants tailored to the needs of each specific school.
Founded in 1919, the Institute of International Education (“the Institute”) advances international education and access to education worldwide by managing scholarships, training, exchange and leadership programs; conducting research and facilitating policy dialogue on global higher education; and protecting scholarship around the world. With the current crisis in Syria stretching into its sixth year, the Institute continues to work collaboratively with organizations around the world to reach students whose education has been disrupted or delayed, getting them back into school and building a pathway to a better future. This project, to support Syrian students in continuation of their university studies, will be conducted in cooperation with the Carnegie Corporation, Ford Foundation, and 200 U.S. universities that have agreed to waive tuition for one or more Syrian students. These universities and associated funders constitute the Syria Consortium, which since 2012 has provided more than $4.5 million in assistance to 333 Syrian students.
