The award provides general operating support to Grist Magazine. Grist is a nonprofit, independent media organization dedicated to telling stories of climate solutions and a just future. Its goal is to use the power of storytelling to illuminate the way toward a better world. To achieve this, Grist recently shifted its focus to stories that show how we can slash carbon emissions and innovate and adapt to a future with an altered climate without leaving anyone behind. A longtime leader in innovative environmental journalism, Grist is expanding its coverage by creating local bureaus across the United States, with Illinois and Michigan among the first, to strengthen local environmental coverage. Grist is also creating a new desk solely committed to covering climate change and Indigenous affairs. Three years of operational support enables Grist to build out these new initiatives and continue making its stories available to the public without a paywall.

Its goal is to use the power of storytelling to illuminate the way toward a better world. The Uproot Project, incubated at Grist, is a national network for journalists of color who cover environmental issues, as well as students and others aspiring to cover this beat. This X-Grant supports Uproot Project's 2024 National Convening at the Society of Environmental Journalists Conference, where it will convene its members, offer training and mentorship opportunities, and gather input on its next phase of organizational growth. This X-Grant also supports Uproot Project's third iteration of its Journey of a Story gallery exhibit and panel discussion that will explore why diverse voices are necessary in environmental journalism. The public exhibit will take place in New Orleans in the fall of 2024 and consist of audio and visual representations of up to six environmental stories written by Uproot members.
