This project aims to deepen insights into how China's leaders perceive China's power status, U.S.-China  relations, and America's and China's roles in Asia. It will do so by conducting surveys of Chinese International Relations (IR) scholars, who serve as a proxy-measure of the Chinese governments' opinion, and by evaluating major Chinese IR journals and books from 2000 to present. The study will advance the Asia Security Initiative goal of better understanding how China's elites think so as to better inform U.S. policy in the region. Funds will be used for partial staff salaries, travel, surveys, publication costs, and administrative support.
