Grantmakers for Effective Organizations (GEO), founded in 1998 and based in Washington, D.C., organizes national and topically focused programming that facilitates the sharing of information and experiences among members to support a more efficient, accountable, equitable, and effective philanthropic sector. Through these activities, GEO helps to connect more than 6,000 individuals from foundations, government agencies, and philanthropy-serving organizations via its conferences, online discussions, and educational programs. This grant provides GEO with support for general operations, some of which may be used to support its 2022 National Conference in Chicago.

Its 2017 Learning Conference, set for May 31 and June 1 in Chicago, is being planned and developed in partnership with Forefront as well as other Chicago-based funders and non-profits. Held every other year, the Learning Conference hosts discussions, networking opportunities and site visits for participants working to improve philanthropic practice through learning, monitoring, and evaluation.

GEO’s project, "An Exploration of Change in Philanthropy," seeks to understand how and why some foundations make significant improvements while others do not based on in-depth interviews with foundation leaders.
