The oldest and largest nonprofit theater in Chicago, the Goodman Theater is committed to producing both classic and contemporary works, giving voice to a wide range of artists and visions. It seeks to be the premier cultural organization in Chicago, providing productions and programs that make an essential contribution to the quality of life in the city. With this award, the Goodman Theater holds staff training and community engagement programming to coincide with its theatrical production exploring the Native American experience.
The Goodman Theatre produces nine shows each year that include both classic and contemporary works, giving voice to a wide range of artists and perspectives. This award supports professional development for its Associate Managing Director to pursue an online certificate program in diversity and inclusion.
The Goodman Theatre is the oldest and largest nonprofit theater in Chicago. The Goodman produces nine shows each year that include both classic and contemporary works, giving voice to a wide range of artists and perspectives. During this award period, the Goodman is strengthening its programs that commission, support, and produce new works, especially by artists of color and women artists. It is continuing to expand its education programs and increase its infrastructure to engage and support patrons with disabilities. This award recommends five years of renewed general operating support to the Goodman Theatre.
This grant will provide renewed multi-year general operating support to the Goodman Theatre, the largest nonprofit theatre in Chicago. It has been locally, nationally and internationally recognized for its productions and community programs that engage increasingly diverse Chicago communities in a cultural dialogue. Over the past three decades the Goodman Theatre has produced over one hundred new plays, including 26 world premieres by playwrights of color including David Henry Hwang’s Chinglish; Tanya Saracho’s El Nogalar; MacArthur Fellow Lynn Nottage’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Ruined and Ifa Bayeza’s The Ballad of Emmett Till. Goodman’s productions reach 255,000 theatergoers annually and provide theatre experiences free of charge to nearly 3,000 high school students.
