Grants

2016 (2 years)
$300,000

The Global Fund for Children (The Fund) is a U.S.-based intermediary grantmaker that invests in locally-led, emergent, grassroots community organizations serving some of the most marginalized children and youth in the world. The Fund previously received MacArthur support through the Partnership to Strengthen Innovation and Practice in Secondary Education (PSIPSE) collaborative to strengthen seven innovative grassroots organizations in conflict-affected areas of Uganda. These organizations provide a variety of program models that help marginalized female youth to access education, successfully transition to the next grade level of schooling, and overcome trauma through psychosocial support. In addition, these programs also provide vocational, management, and entrepreneurship training to help young women obtain marketable skills that will assist them in finding viable employment or start their own businesses. During the course of the first award, The Fund has focused attention on helping these seven grassroots organizations gather data and document key lessons learned on which models and strategies are most effective and replicable within their individual communities. This award supports four out of the initial seven organizations to receive additional technical training and organizational support. In particular, The Fund focuses on building organizations’ skills to engage with key stakeholders, further monitor and evaluate their work, use data to analyze the effectiveness of their models, and gain skills in fundraising and resource mobilization in order to create sustainability. These grassroots organizations will also continue to receive as-needed technical support for their programs and will engage in peer learning and collaboration to strengthen their capacities and disseminate findings.
