Freedom of the Press Foundation (FPF) is a nonprofit organization that works to defend and strengthen the First and Fourth Amendment protections for the press. FPF develops encryption tools for safe transmission of information, trains newsrooms on digital security practices, and documents attacks on the press. The U.S. Press Freedom Tracker (Tracker), housed at FPF, is a collaborative project of several major press freedom groups working in the United States. The Tracker was created in 2017 to collect, document, and report on all press freedom violations in the United States. Using journalistic standards and editorial rigor, every case that is brought to the attention of the Tracker is researched, categorized, published, and disseminated. This grant provides project support for the operations of the Tracker. The goal of the U.S. Press Freedom Tracker is to document systematically the ways in which independent journalism is being undermined in this country, and to use the evidence to raise awareness and support for the vital role that a free press plays in a democratic society.
