First Look Media Works is a nonprofit organization with a mission to support public interest multimedia and journalism. Its documentary platform, Field of Vision, works with journalists and filmmakers to help them create and distribute short- and feature-length documentary films. IF/Then Shorts, a project of Field of Vision since 2020, provides multifaceted support to film teams creating short documentary films. MacArthur funds support operations of IF/Then including finishing funds for film teams. The intended outcomes of this grant are more nuanced, journalistic short documentary films that can reach U.S. audiences and create greater understanding of social issues.

Since July 2020, First Look Media Works’ documentary platform, Field of Vision, which commissions, supports and distributes journalistic documentary films, has become the new home for the If/Then Shorts project, previously a project of the Tribeca Film Institute. This grant supports the If/Then project’s provision of funding, creative, editorial, and distribution support to diverse documentary filmmakers creating short documentaries. The intended outcomes of this work are a more robust support system for a diverse set of nonfiction multimedia storytellers working on short documentary films in the United States and globally.

Since 2020, First Look Media Works’ documentary platform and Field of Vision division have become the new home for the If/Then Shorts project, previously a project of the Tribeca Film Institute, which paused operations in 2020. If/Then Shorts supports documentary filmmakers across underserved regions of the United States to complete short documentary films on social issues. If/Then is part of First Look Media Works' Field of Vision and provides multi-faceted support to short documentary film projects across the United States and the world. This transfer grant supports continued implementation of the If/Then Shorts project within First Look Media Works. The intended outcome of this work is a more robust support system for a diverse set of nonfiction multimedia storytellers at work on short-form documentary projects.
