Environment Conservation Society (SwitchON Foundation)

The Environment Conservation Society is a non-profit organization established in 2008 with headquarters in Kolkata, West Bengal. It operates in nine Indian states and has recently expanded its work to the Indian states of Jharkhand and Maharashtra. Its focus is on addressing climate change and simultaneously reducing social inequalities through initiatives for resilient cities, clean air, and clean energy access in rural areas. Over the last 14 years, the organization has incubated several social enterprises and state-level networks to promote environmental sustainability. Its vision is to create sustainable livelihoods and address environmental issues through innovative business models and technologies, with a mission to bring about lasting and equitable change in society. By 2030, the organization aims to create sustainable livelihood opportunities for 10 million people in India.

The organization is embarking on a multi-state, year-long set of events under the Move for Earth mission, which aims to celebrate sustainable practices that support ecological, human, and economic health. 

Environment Conservation Foundation (SwitchON) is a leading nonprofit institution in eastern India that works with rural communities to achieve equitable and sustainable development. Since 2008, it has simultaneously promoted sustainable livelihoods and addressed environmental challenges. SwitchOn works with state agencies and private sector actors to augment the use of clean energy, leveraging its relationships and learnings from field interventions. This award enables SwitchON to increase the incomes of smallholder farmers in the states of Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal, and simultaneously mitigate energy emissions from agricultural activities. The award supports SwitchON to develop an ecosystem for rapid scale-up of solar irrigation technology and to promote climate-smart agricultural practices in the three target states. It assists SwitchON to conduct evidence-based research in existing field sites where it has already enabled a switch from diesel-powered irrigation to solar technology.
