Established in 1976, Ensemble Español Spanish Dance Theater (Ensemble Español) is committed to preserving, presenting, and promoting the diverse traditions of Flamenco, Folkloric, Classical, Bolera, and Contemporary dance and music from Spain in Chicago. As a resident company at Northeastern Illinois University, Ensemble Español celebrates Spain's vibrant heritage through performances, educational initiatives, and community engagement programs. With this award, Ensemble Español convenes conversations on ethnic dance and music, and its relevance and significance within the Chicago arts ecosystem.
The Ensemble Espafiol Spanish Dance Theater presents classical, folkloric, flamenco and contemporary dance and music traditions of Spain. In addition to its professional performances, Ensemble Espafiol has a dance school, a youth ensemble, and offers an academic curriculum in conjunction with Northeastern Illinois, where it is in residence. Ensemble Espafiol will engage in an artistic exchange with the Madrid-based dance company, Nuevo Ballet Espafiol, which includes Spanish choreographers Angel Rojas and Carlos Rodriguez. The exchange will culminate in the production of an original dance piece that will premiere during the Ensemble's 40th anniversary season. This grant funds direct project costs: travel, accommodations, artist fees, artistic materials, venue costs, and marketing. It is recommended as part of the International Connections Fund.
