Civic Federation

Founded in 1894 by a group of prominent Chicago citizens that included Jane Addams and Bertha Palmer, the Civic Federation is a nonprofit, nonpartisan government research organization that provides analysis and recommendations on government finance issues for the Chicago region and the State of Illinois. Its members include business and professional leaders from a wide range of Chicago area corporations, professional service firms, and institutions. In 2008, with funding from the Foundation, the Civic Federation established the Institute for Illinois’ Fiscal Sustainability (the Institute) to provide independent, objective, continuing analysis of finance and budget issues in Illinois. The Institute has developed into an influential and highly valued resource for policymakers and the media, while also educating the general public and nonprofits about the state’s financial challenges and their impact on the future. The award provides operating support for the Institute to continue to provide timely analysis of budget and tax policies in Illinois, Cook County and the City of Chicago.

This grant supports the Civic Federation, a non-profit, nonpartisan research organization that works to enhance the quality and cost-effectiveness of government services in Illinois. It analyzes broad categories of the Illinois budget, including spending initiatives, revenue options, pension funding, and debt issuance, with a focus on efficiency, transparency, and effectiveness. It also examines local government budgets in Illinois, including Cook County and the City of Chicago. The particular focus of this grant is the Civic Federation’s Institute for Illinois’ Fiscal Sustainability, which provides policymakers, the media, and the public with timely policy analysis and recommendations on state and local government fiscal issues.
