Founded in 1988, City Year is a national service program that unites young adults from diverse backgrounds for a demanding year of full-time community service. City Year trains and deploys 3,000 members serving in 29 U.S. cities, as well as in South Africa and the United Kingdom. City Year Chicago seeks to address the lack of equitable access to educational opportunities. Its members partner with teachers and schools to create learning environments where all students can build on their strengths and fully engage in their education. With this award, City-Year Chicago organizes a series of learning events with local leaders and activists designed to identify available resources, introduce City Year fellows to the neighborhoods in which they will be placed over the oncoming year, and plan civic projects in conjunction with community organizations.
