City of Chicago

The City of Chicago is the third largest city by population in the United States, regularly providing public services for over two-and-one-half million residents. Since the release in late 2015 of a video depicting a Chicago Police Department officer shooting a teenager, the city has been embroiled in a policing crisis while simultaneously experiencing levels of gun violence unseen since the early 1990s. This award provides renewed support to the Office of the Mayor of Chicago in responding to the dual crises of police legitimacy and violence. It sustains senior level staff to help implement reforms emerging from the Police Accountability Task Force, a consent decree negotiated with the Illinois Attorney General, and the newly reorganized Mayor's Office of Public Safety.
