The Chicago Jazz Philharmonic, founded in 2004, is a 55-piece orchestra that composes and performs complex works designed to bridge the gap between jazz and classical music. Its programming includes guest performances, performances of original works, and a Chicago Public Schools arts education program called JazzAlive. The Jazz Philharmonic has a national reputation for its artistic flexibility. It reaches annual audiences of 42,000 people through its performance and educational work. A MacArthur Award recognizes organizations that have excellent programs, that are well-managed, and that are at an inflection point, where they are likely to grow either in size or influence. Chicago Jazz Philharmonic will allocate most of the award to an operating fund; a smaller portion will be used to develop and implement a strategic plan.
