Centro de Derechos Humanos Miguel Agustin Pro Juarez was founded in 1988 to promote and defend human rights of vulnerable groups in Mexico. Particularly women, indigenous people, immigrants, and victims of state repression. It advances human rights protections through litigation, advocacy and support to victims. The award supports litigation to change procedures and practices of investigative agencies, recommendations on standards for criminal investigations to be adopted by Mexico’s new National Prosecutor’s Office, and sharing lessons from the litigation strategies with state-based human rights organizations.
Founded in 1988, Centro de Derechos Humanos Miguel Agustin Pro Juarez is a leading civil society organization in advancing human rights protections through litigation, advocacy and support to victims. It provides support to victims of abuse in navigating Mexico’s justice system and focuses on priority groups such as women, indigenous communities, and victims of government repression. The award supports litigation to document gaps in investigations of human rights abuses, as well as drafting of policy recommendations on standards for criminal investigations to be adopted by Mexico’s new National Prosecutor’s Office.
This grant supports the legal representation of paradigmatic human rights cases under Mexico’s transition to a criminal justice system based on public, oral trials. It also supports national and international advocacy efforts to improve Mexico’s implementation of due process guarantees in its judicial system.
