2023 (1 year)
$150,000

Incorporated by a group of intellectuals in 1992, the Center for Democratic Development Research and Training (CEDDERT) is an independent trust to promote and advance scientific research and training to solve problems of local communities and national development in Africa. CEDDERT works to reduce the 26.8 percent of northern Nigeria's population without access to education. With this discretionary award, CEDDERT works with partners to expand access to opportunity and safe spaces for vulnerable children ages 7 to 17 years from the poorest homes, some with incarcerated parents. This award affirms a commitment to gender equity, social inclusion, and the Foundation's Just Imperative.

2021 (1 year)
$500,000

Established in 1992 as a nonprofit in Nigeria, the Centre for Democratic Development, Research, and Training (CEDDERT) uses research and policy advocacy to educate and influence policymakers on transparency and accountability in Nigeria's public sector. A previous award to CEDDERT enabled it to empower community groups to track Universal Basic Education Commission funds in three Local Government Areas in Kaduna State and contributed to increased communication between community groups and national and state education representatives. This project is responding to one of the glaring challenges of COVID-19: the disproportionate impact of the pandemic on Almajirai (young migrant Qur'anic school pupils). It enables CEDDERT to build on work supported by an X-Grant to coordinate exploratory conversations on the root causes, dimensions, and scale of struggles faced by Almajirai. The findings will inform public education and advocacy efforts to draw community and policymaker attention to the need for a sustainable protection framework for Almajirai beyond the COVID-19 pandemic. CEDDERT will work with the various governors' forums, especially the northern governors' forum, and the Office of the Senior Special Adviser to the President on Social Investment to influence policy and provide a technical guide for states with forward-thinking plans on addressing vulnerabilities under the Almajirai system and advocate for inclusive planning and programming to meet these children’s needs
