Located in Vienna and Budapest, Central European University is an undergraduate- and graduate-level "crossroads" university where faculty and students from more than 100 countries come to engage in interdisciplinary education, pursue advanced scholarship, and address some of society's most vexing problems. The award supports an interdisciplinary research initiative that explores how civic organizations can be re-engaged for strengthening democracy in the age of disruptive social media. Outputs will include an interdisciplinary conference, scholarly articles, and white papers.
Founded in 1991, the Central European University (CEU) is an English-language, mission-driven university with U.S.- and European-accredited programs in the social sciences, humanities, law, policy, and management in Vienna, Budapest, and New York. It is a source of support for building democratic societies that respect human rights and human dignity. With this award, CEU operates the Open Learning Initiative, an adult education program for displaced persons and refugees from an array of nations, including Ukraine. It also offers the Invisible University for Ukraine, a certificate program for college and graduate students whose studies are affected by the 2022 invasion of Ukraine by Russia.
