Center for Justice and International Law

The Center for Justice and International Law (CEJIL) works to improve human rights situations in the countries of the Americas by tackling emblematic issues.  This award provides general operating support for CEJIL’s multi-dimensional efforts to enhance the protection of human rights defenders and achieve state compliance with Inter-American Human Rights System decisions through advocacy, press and media work, and legal defense. It also supports CEJIL’s work to improve the functioning and legitimacy of the System itself through coalition building and technical assistance.  

The Center for Justice and International Law (CEJIL), a leading non-governmental human rights interlocutor before the Inter-American Human Rights System, will work with civil society partners to strengthen the System and advance criminal justice reform in Mexico. It will litigate cases against Mexico before the Inter-American System, monitor State compliance with decisions, and conduct advocacy through the media. The project is designed to help secure the independence and autonomy of the Inter-American System and utilize the System to improve the justice system in Mexico.
