The Center for Civilians in Conflict (or CIVIC) works at the nexus of the human rights, humanitarian, and security fields to make warring parties more responsible for civilians before, during, and after armed conflicts. Its engages in on-the-ground research and reporting that informs pragmatic policy recommendations, as well as technical assistance to warring parties and multilateral institutions. While CIVIC aims to change the behavior of warring parties globally, its work is structured around a few specific conflicts at any given time and engagement with military actors. A longer-term objective is advancing a global expectation among warring parties to recognize and/or provide tangible assistance to civilians they harm, a principle CIVIC calls “making amends.” The award provides a final general operating support award to CIVIC as the Human Rights program area winds down its grantmaking aimed at protecting civilians in armed conflict.
The grant provides general operating support to the Center for Civilians in Conflict as it advances efforts to ensure that warring parties do everything in their power to avoid harming civilians and acknowledge the harm they do cause through recognition and tangible assistance to victims.
