The How Housing Matters to Families and Communities competitive research program is a multi-year, Foundation-supported effort to build a body of evidence to guide U.S. housing policy and practice. While considerable evidence suggests that exposure to stressful circumstances and environmental hazards at a young age has a negative effect on cognitive and socio-emotional development, little is known about how housing conditions affect young children’s early school advancement. Case Western will use this grant to examine the influence of housing experiences on school readiness and early literacy for children entering kindergarten in the Cleveland school district between 2007 and 2010.
