The documentary film Marmato traces the aftermath of the decision by a Canadian gold corporation to demolish the village of Marmato in the Colombian Andes, in order to create an open-pit gold mine. For five centuries, the people of Marmato have extracted small amounts of gold through a traditional, artisanal method of mining. The film follows several characters over four years - local miners, townspeople, mining company personnel, and politicians. Many view the destruction of their community and way of life negatively, while others embrace this flow of foreign capital as necessary and beneficial. Marmato is directed by Mark Grieco and produced by Calle Films.
