Blue Ventures is an international conservation NGO working to develop and implement transformative approaches to coastal management. This award provides operational support for Blue Ventures’ Madagascar program, which focuses on advancing holistic and entrepreneurial marine conservation solutions. Blue Ventures’ five-year Madagascar strategy identifies three strategic priorities: 1) develop a national policy and outreach program, 2) increase the sustainability and impact of Locally Managed Marine Areas (LMMAs) through holistic support, and 3) incubate new models for conservation. In addition to these priorities, this award supports Blue Ventures to share the successful models they have established in Madagascar, such as community-based sea cucumber aquaculture, with communities in other regions that use LMMAs as a marine management approach.
Blue Ventures is an international non-governmental organization working to develop and implement transformative approaches to coastal management. This award is managed by Blue Ventures, and directly supports a national learning network, MItantana HArena Ranomasina avy eny Ifotony (MIHARI). The network coordinates activities to promote and support over 80 Locally Managed Marine Areas (LMMAs) around Madagascar’s coasts. Through this engagement, MIHARI empowers local communities to make and enforce decisions about coastal resources to improve fisheries and reduce biodiversity loss. With this award MIHARI is increasing technical support for LMMAs, representing and advocating for the rights of traditional fishers, and improving the network’s operations.
Blue Ventures is an international conservation NGO working to develop and implement transformative approaches to coastal management. This award supports Blue Ventures’ fisheries and blue forests programs. In partnership with the Velondriake Association, Blue Ventures fisheries program is working in southwest Madagascar to develop fisheries management plans that encourage science-based decision-making and coordination with the private sector and national government. Their blue forests program works along the west coast of Madagascar to develop mangrove management plans that restore and improve multiple ecosystem services, including fisheries, carbon sequestration, and avoided deforestation.
Blue Ventures is an international conservation NGO working to develop and implement transformative approaches to coastal management. This award is managed by Blue Ventures, and directly supports Madagascar’s Locally Managed Marine Areas Network (MIHARI). The network supports peer-to-peer learning between organizations and communities engaged in marine resource management in Madagascar. Over two years MIHARI is developing the capacity to better support Locally Managed Marine Areas in Madagascar by expanding the network’s presence in fisher communities. The project prioritizes sites where existing capacity and technical support are weak, and focuses on fisheries of economic importance to communities.
Blue Ventures develops transformative approaches for catalyzing and sustaining locally led marine conservation. In 2011, The Population and Reproductive Health and Conservation and Sustainable Development programs jointly supported Blue Ventures to add family planning and maternal and child health activities into their existing conservation efforts in Madagascar, resulting in an integrated population, health, and environment (PHE) project. Integrated messaging and programming helps the community make the connection between large family size and diminishing natural resources. With this award, Blue Ventures staff is testing the extent to which they can hand over implementation of health services to lay health workers and the Ministry of Health, while maintaining quality and safety; giving technical assistance to conservation organizations in Madagascar seeking to integrate health interventions into their programming; and providing global leadership on PHE by speaking at events and writing papers and articles.
Blue Ventures is a science-led social enterprise that works with coastal communities to develop transformative approaches for nurturing and sustaining locally-led marine conservation initiatives. They work in places where the ocean is vital to local people, cultures, and economies, and where there is a fundamental need to support human development. This grant will support efforts to further develop and formalize the MIHARI Locally-Managed Marine Area (LMMA) network in Madagascar. The project will benefit Madagascar’s LMMA communities by building on existing conservation partnerships throughout Madagascar.
Blue Ventures is a science-led social enterprise that works with coastal communities to develop transformative approaches for nurturing and sustaining locally-led marine conservation initiatives. They work in places where the ocean is vital to local people, cultures, and economies, and where there is a fundamental need to support human development. This grant will further develop six Locally-Managed Marine Areas (LMMAs), encompassing 71 coastal villages in western Madagascar along the Mozambique Channel.
Blue Ventures is dedicated to tropical marine conservation, education, and sustainable development of coastal communities. For over a decade Blue Ventures has been involved in the creation of locally-managed marine areas in Madagascar. Blue Ventures will coordinate and hold an official side event to the International Union for the Conservation of Natures World Conservation Congress in Jeju, South Korea in September 2012. The workshop will bring together representatives from community-based marine conservation networks in the South Pacific, Western Indian Ocean, and the Caribbean to facilitate a meaningful exchange of ideas on best practices, lessons learned, common challenges, and new approaches to community-based/locally-managed marine conservation. The workshop will develop the foundation for a global network connecting regional LMMA networks.
