Association Fanamby is a Malagasy civil society organization working to conserve Madagascar’s unique biodiversity. This three-year award supports Fanamby to create a business-driven strategy for conservation to be applied across the five protected areas the organization co-manages with community partners. These areas are home to some of Madagascar’s most unique and threatened biodiversity. With Fanamby’s guidance, the communities living within the areas are working to sustainably cultivate and capture a variety of high value natural resources, such as vanilla, fish, spices, and plants for essential oils. Through Fanamby’s cooperative business partner, Sahanala, community partners access global markets and earn a fair value for their goods.
Association Fanamby (Fanamby) is a Malagasy association devoted to improving the management of protected areas in partnership with and for the benefit of local communities. Fanamby manages the Loky Manambato Protected Area in northeast Madagascar with specific focus on strengthening community engagement in resource management. This award supports improved management of the marine area of Loky Manambato. Fanamby is using local radio programming to raise awareness and promote understanding about the rights and responsibilities of communities to manage their resources. This provides an ongoing platform for engaging communities in resource management and sustainable development activities. Using a community-based fisheries management approach, Fanamby is supporting communities to restore and sustain fisheries resources within the protected area.
To enhance participation of local communities in the design and management of Loky-Manambato protected area in Madagascar.
