The Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) is a membership organization of journalists, students, educators, and media organizations. AAJA's mission is to address the barriers for journalists from historically under-represented communities and to promote best practices in the journalism industry. While AAJA serves a mostly U.S.-based membership, interest in its programming is growing in the Asia Pacific region. This grant supports a landscape assessment of the state of independent journalism and press freedom in Asia, as a step toward AAJA considering its role in supporting journalists and newsrooms in Asia.
The Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) is a nonprofit membership organization dedicated to increasing Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) representation, perspectives, and leadership in newsrooms, and advocates for accurate representation of AAPI communities in the media at large. This general operating support grant supports AAJA’s national programming and staff, and the intended outcomes are greater equity and inclusion for AAPI journalists in the media field, and more nuanced, accurate, and representative understanding of AAPI communities by the public.
The Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) works to increase Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) representation, perspectives, and leadership in newsrooms and in the media. By supporting the skill building and professional development of AAPI reporters and media makers, as well as, by holding the journalism industry accountable, the Asian American Journalists Association contributes to more and better reporting on and about AAPI and other communities of color. This general operating grant supports AAJA’s national programming and staff. The goal of this work is to promote greater equity and inclusion for AAPI journalists in the news and media industry, and ultimately, more accurate representations and reporting about and for the AAPI community.
