Arizona State University’s (ASU’s) Center for Narrative and Emerging Media (NEM), housed within the Herberger Institute of Design and the Arts (HIDA), is a research, teaching, and gathering venue, with a focus on diversifying the demographics of who gets to create and distribute narratives using emerging media technologies in the areas of arts, culture and nonfiction. The grant supports the activities of the Center for Narrative and Emerging Media and the intended outcomes are that diverse artists, filmmakers, journalists, and community organizations are able to create compelling and socially relevant nonfiction stories using immersive technologies.
Arizona State University’s Center for Narrative and Emerging Media (the Center), is a joint undertaking of the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts’ Sidney Poitier New American Film School and the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. The Center is dedicated to helping students, community members, artists, and media professionals use the tools of immersive storytelling to generate greater public understanding of complex social issues. The grant supports the Center and the intended outcomes are that diverse artists, filmmakers, journalists, and community organizations are able to create compelling and socially relevant nonfiction stories using immersive technologies.
Arizona State University (ASU)’s No Borders Media Lab is a program within the Sidney Poitier New American Film School of the Herberger Institute of Design and the Arts. It is designed to provide multifaceted support to mid-career filmmakers to develop new projects that explore the Latinx experience in all of its complexity and nuance. It hosts convenings and supports research and development of film projects. MacArthur funds provide support for the No Borders Media Lab and the intended outcome is that through robust collaboration, the groundwork is laid for future production of stories that will generate more accurate public understanding of the experiences of Latinx people.
