Advocacy Nigeria is a Nigerian nonprofit established to promote respect and equality for the rights of women and promote the voice of women in governance and development through research, advocacy, and campaigning. Previous Foundation awards to Advocacy Nigeria aimed to improve accountability for maternal health services in Adamawa, Gombe, and Zamfara states by mobilizing “accountability champions” among traditional rulers, religious leaders, government officials, and political parties, and tracking and advocating for accountable budgetary allocations and use for health. This final award assists Advocacy Nigeria to strengthen cooperation among the network of accountability champions, improve access to state budgets, and advocate for remedial actions necessary for improved budget outcomes. This award is part of the maternal health accountability portfolio in Nigeria and is expected to produce evidence of how accountability mechanisms can contribute to improving maternal health outcomes and reducing the maternal mortality burden.
Advocacy Nigeria will work towards reducing maternal mortality in three states through (a) monitoring of the implementation of policies on free maternal health services committed to by governments, and (b) improving accountability on the quality of services provided at primary health care levels.
