Established in 2015 by Section 469(1) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015 (ACJA), the Administration of Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee (ACJMC) is the custodian of the ACJA. It is charged with ensuring the effective application of the Act by all stakeholders in the criminal justice system. With this award, ACJMC is strengthening the implementation of the ACJA by monitoring compliance with the critical, essential, and unifying elements of the Act, which focus on pre-trial processes, trial proceedings, case management processes and timeframes, and institutional frameworks for sustainable reform. ACJMC advocates for compliance with provisions of the ACJA that are related to gender, equity, and social inclusion; establishes and provides guidance to monitoring committees in the states that have adopted the ACJA and included a committee in their laws; and advocates for commissions in the states that do not have them. Finally, ACJMC advocates for and participates in the legislative and constitutional review process that seeks to align the ACJA with the 1999 constitution, in response to the Supreme Court’s recent decision to nullify section 396(7) of the ACJA. This project is implemented in collaboration with other On Nigeria criminal justice grantees.
