Psych ER tells the story of America’s mental health crisis through the lives of the patients and doctors at a Los Angeles County Psychiatric Emergency Room. As local psychiatric hospitals and clinics continue to close because of federal defunding, the County Psych ER has become the mainstay of treatment for patients with mental illness. The film follows patients suffering from mental illness who enter and leave the hospital on a regular basis as they try to seek the treatment that will allow them to live with dignity.
