In 2006, a giant underground mud volcano erupted in Sidoarjo, Indonesia. The disaster buried twelve villages and forced mass evacuations. It is widely believed that the explosion was caused by natural gas drilling by a multinational corporation owned by the richest man in the country. Today, the volcano spews the equivalent of 40 Olympic-sized swimming pools of mud and toxic methane gases into the area each day, and most international scientists believe that the eruptions will likely continue for 10-20 years. Mudflow follows the stories of displaced villagers against the backdrop of Indonesia’s 2014 presidential election, spotlighting questions about environmental justice, transitional democracy, and corporate and government accountability.
