With global leaders looking to California for signs of hope on climate change, Carbon Trade/Off follows the construction of a promising yet controversial component of the state’s “cap and trade” plan. Under the plan, California industry would pay Mexican farmers to conserve rainforest in order to offset greenhouse gas emissions in California. Carbon Trade/Off follows the learning and transformation that occur as policy innovators come into contact with the indigenous farmers slotted to supply carbon credits. The film reveals the fears, hopes and misunderstandings between very different men and women who nonetheless share a common desire for grassroots solutions to our greatest global challenge.
