Journalism has played a critical role in pushing for accountability into the practices of companies such as Facebook, Google, and Twitter, yet newsrooms are increasingly leveraging such platforms as they seek out a sustainable future, according to a report by the Tow Center for Digital Journalism. The MacArthur-supported report finds a rapid and ongoing merger of the functions of publishers and platforms and a high-level of involvement from platform companies in influencing news production. Platform companies are increasingly implementing their own editorial practices and structures, including human curation of stories and feeds, in response to the spread of misinformation and scandals about the misuse of personal data.
